Description:  Ybor City is named after Vincent Martinez-Ybor, a Spanish immigrant, who founded the cigar industry in Tampa and built the first cigar factory in Ybor in 1885. Ybor learned the cigar business after moving to Cuba at the age of 14, and started his first company in Havana in 1856 and moved his plant to Key West during the Ten Years’ War in 1869, however looked to Tampa due to unfavorable conditions in Key West, primarily the city’s transportation system. In 1885, he moved to Tampa and built factories in what is now called Ybor City.
