Reading Between the Lions

Austin, Texas

Paul Bond (http://www.paulbondart.com/)

Windsor Park Branch Library, 5833 Westminster Dr., Austin, Texas, 78723
Owner:  City of Austin Art in Public Places Collection
Date:  2000
Placement:  libraries (buildings)
Artwork Type:  bronzes (sculptures)
Material:  bronze (metal)
Description:  This sculpture plays on classic images of lions guarding the entrances to classical buildings, such as the New York Public Library. A mature lion rests naturally with one leg dangling over the edge of the base, his cub between his forelegs. The artist included the cub as a twist on traditional images of forbidding lions, and to make the lion appear more welcoming to the families who use the library.
