Description:  Iowa artist David B. Dahlquist, principal at RDG Dahlquist Art Studio, was commissioned to create this site-specific and integrated public artwork for the Iowa Department of Transportation's Motor Vehicle Division in Ankeny, Iowa. The interior artwork, measuring 32 feet in height and 17 feet in width, is made from pervious concrete, stained and modeled to effect, and incorporates foot and tire tread marks in keeping with the Motor Vehicle Division's mission. The artwork is lighted at the base by spotlights recessed into the floor.According to the artist, "The state of Iowa has played an important role in the history of transportation, including the development of one of the earliest and most successful road systems throughout the country. Based upon an “archaeological excavation,” this installation records the discoveryof the “fossilized” tracks of many different vehicles that have traveledthe roads of Iowa."
