Description:  Tony Smith (1912-1980) was born in South Orange, New Jersey. He studied at the Art Students League, New York, 1933-35; the New Bauhaus, Chicago, 1937-38; and worked as an architect apprentice to Frank Lloyd Wright, 1938-40. Exhibiting widely, including the Documenta in Kassel, West Germany, 1968; and the 11th Biennial Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition, Antwerp, Belgium, 1971; Smith is represented at the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Corcoran Gallery, Washington, D.C.; the Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford, Conneticut and the Detroit Arts Institute, Michigan.
